A Pool-Side Playlist

Last week when I was hanging around the pool with my family I volunteered to DJ a pool-side playlist. I didn’t have any turntables but I did have my phone and a subscription to Spotify. Present for this session were two septuagenarians so my mission to provide entertainment to span the generational divide was clear to me, and the pressure was on.

It got me thinking about the best carefree, fun, feel-good songs for summer, those with wide appeal. I’m not talking about the song the media would have us believe is “The Song of the Summer”, whichever Robin Thicke or Carly Rae Jepsen ear worm is in heavy rotation, at CVS, the bar and on fm radio.

No, I thought it would be fun to compile a list of my picks to lift your spirits, put you in the mood to drive around with your car’s top down or lay around in a lawn chair with your own top down, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Of course, I had to ask Stesha for her best summer song picks too, they are also below!

Here are mine:

Lovely Day by Bill Withers. I dare you to get in your car first thing in the morning with the sun already blazing, iced latte in hand, play this and then try not to smile:

(Bonus points for cross-generational appeal!)

Psychic City by Yacht. I haven’t met a pre-schooler yet who doesn’t demand, “again!” when you put on this catchy and carefree tune. It’s somewhat nonsensical and I think that is what they like about it, and there will be dancing, and giggling. Hope you’re okay with that!

Next up, The Blessed Breeze by Fruit Bats. All I can say about this song is that it makes me happy. I’ve listened to it one hundred times over the years and I’m still not tired of it. And every breeze in Dallas this time of year does feel #blessed!

Go Outside by Cults. Yes, the name of the band is Cults, and yes there is Jim Jones footage at the beginning of the video. So maybe this song is actually a huge bummer. It’s talking about going outside and it sounds fun and summery, plus it seems like you might be able to learn to play it on a xylophone.

Dark Days by Local Natives. Local Natives get plenty of play from me year round, but this song in particular will have you crooning along, plus the video is kinda gorgeous and I feel like I need to make it up to you after the whole cult thing above. (wince).

Stesha’s additions to the list:

Put Your Records On by Corrine Bailey Rae. The epitome of carefree summer fun!

Die Fun by Kacey Musgraves. We both kind of love her. DEAL WITH IT!

A Head Full of Dreams by Coldplay. “A wonderful adventure!”

I Got by Young the Giant.

One Wild Life by Gungor.

What do you think? What would you add to the list? Do you disagree with any of our choices? It’s ok, we can still be friends!
