Stories I’ve Told On First Dates

A Q&A with Stesha

What was your first job?

I worked at Chick-fil-A with three of my best friends. It was a blast. We made minimum wage but every weekend there would be contests in which we could win movie tickets. Whomever sold the most brownies or “Value Sized” the most meals would win. I am very competitive in nature so I can’t say that there weren’t at least one or two cat fights that occurred over the 3 year span I worked there. I always get the question, “Do you still like to eat Chick-fil-A?” Let’s just say I eat it once maybe twice a week to this day. I think they put something in that chicken.

What is your “Soul City”?

Palm Springs. There are so many reasons I love this city. The mid-century architecture, hot days, cool nights and the cozy feeling of being nestled at the foot of the San Jacinto mountains. I can honestly say I am my happiest with a cocktail and good book soaking up the desert sun at the Ace Hotel Swim Club.

More necessary personal maintenance function: hair color or manicure?

Definitely hair color. If you have watched Sex and the City as much as I have, you have noticed that Carrie (everyone and their mom’s fashion icon) never has manicured nails. It must not be that important.

Which fictional movie character would you marry I mean if you weren’t already happily married I mean obviously?

Noah (Ryan Gosling) from The Notebook. (Yes, I’m basic)

What is the last book you read or podcast you listened to?

I read “Room” by Emma Donogue. The story of a mother that creates a life for her son in an 11’x11′ space after being taken and held captive. A little raw at times and heart wrenching but overall is a story of unconquerable love. Worth your time! I am now reading, Modern Lovers by Emma Straub. It’s a New York Times best-selling novel about a group of former band-mates and their children living in present day Brooklyn. It’s really great so far!

If you had to choose only three clothing lines to live in what would they be?

Ulla Johnson, Spell and The Gypsy Collective, and Chloe. Bold bohemian patterns and textiles tailored to perfection.

Do you have a life guru?

Mother Teresa. Her mission in life was Love. Her selflessness, boldness and faithfulness are attributes that I want to have. One of my favorite quotes from her is, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

Best concert you have ever been to?

Sorry not sorry, Justin Bieber. My friend Katie got us third row seats to his Purpose tour. We screamed and danced like 13 year olds. It was incredible.

What are your desert island snacks?

I love love love movie popcorn, and a newfound favorite are the “Better Bites” vegan chocolate covered cookie dough. I literally could eat a package in one sitting.

What do you think is the most important quality to cultivate?

To be compassionate. My mom always told us “Be kinder than necessary for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.” That is something that I want to teach my daughter.
